Avoid These 3 Septic System Scares!
It’s that time of year again when kids dress up in their favorite costumes and overindulge on candy. Everyone enjoys Halloween fun and festivities but save the scares for ghosts and ghouls. Proper maintenance will help you avoid these septic system nightmares this fall.

Terrible Odors

Sewage odors coming from your septic tank will send guests and trick-or-treaters running from your house. These odors are unpleasant and often embarrassing, and they’re a sign that you’ve waited too long to get your septic tank pumped out. If your septic tank starts to stink up your house, get it pumped immediately and use CCLS bacterial enzyme to control the odor. Better yet, get your septic tank pumped every 2 to 3 years to prevent odors in the first place. If odors persist even with regular pumping and CCLS use, ask our technicians about installing a trap in your septic line.

Cracked Septic Tank Lid

Over time, hydrogen sulfide gas in your septic tank starts to deteriorate the concrete lid on your tank. Likewise, thin plastic lids become weak and brittle as they endure the elements. In either case, this presents a frightening situation. Cracked, broken, or otherwise compromised septic tank lids are very dangerous to children and pets who may accidentally fall in the tank. To prevent a potential catastrophe, be sure to inspect the condition of your septic tank lid. If you find any damage, replace the lid immediately. Hapchuk, Inc recommends a heavy-duty plastic septic tank lid secured with screws.

Wastewater Backing Up Into Your House

Whether it’s a buildup of grease, a tangle of intrusive roots, or your kid’s favorite toy, a blockage in your septic line is sure to cause a big mess and a lot of headaches. While you can’t always stop children from flushing things they shouldn’t, you can prevent most other causes of septic line clogs. The most common reason for backups is infrequent septic tank pumping. Scum and grease float on top of the water in your septic tank, and over time, this scum layer can build up so much that it blocks the inlet pipe into your tank. Regular septic tank pumping will prevent this. If there are cracks in your septic line, intrusive roots can grow into the line and clog it. These roots can be controlled by applying RootX root inhibitor on an annual basis. But sometimes, you just can’t avoid a septic line clog. When this happens, give Hapchuk, Inc a call, and we will use a high-pressure water jetter to clear the line and get your water draining again!
